Eczema & Dry Skin Conditions

Hydromol Intensive bottleAtopic eczema (atopic dermatitis) is a chronic, relapsing itchy skin condition.1 People with atopic eczema have a reduction in the lipid barrier of the skin; this leads to an increase in water loss and a tendency towards dry skin.2

As water is lost from the stratum corneum, the corneocytes shrink, and cracks in the skin appear. These cracks allow irritants and allergens to penetrate the upper skin layers, leading to inflammation and pruritis. As patients scratch the skin, further damage is caused, resulting in the itch-scratch-itch cycle.3

It's estimated that atopic eczema accounts for 30% of all dermatological consultations in general practice, and that 80% of eczema cases occur in children under the age of five.2 The British Association of Dermatologists estimates that 15-20% of schoolchildren and 2-10% of adults are affected by eczema, making it a very common, and occasionally distressing, condition.4
