Eczema is the most common type of dermatitis.
Their skin can be red, itchy and dry and it can occur on any part of the skin. There are times when it can get better and there are other times when it gets worse.
Anyone can get it, but they are more likely to have eczema if someone in their family has it.
The exact cause of eczema is not known and generally is not caused by one single thing alone.
Eczema can have certain triggers, such as soaps, stress or the weather. Food allergies can also trigger eczema, especially in younger children.
It can also develop alongside other allergenic conditions such as asthma and hay fever.
It may be useful to keep a diary to identify any triggers which could help to alleviate your child’s symptoms.
Get tips and advise on how to break the itch/scratch cycle
Eczema is a complex condition, the itching can be related to the release of certain chemical mediators that stimulate the nerve fibres in the upper layer of the skin.
These increase the sensitivity of the skin making them more prone to itching and scratching. Your child will often scratch without realising it.
Everyone’s body is different and when your child comes into contact with certain substances or situations listed below these can potentially trigger a flare of their eczema.
- Shampoos/bubble bath with fragrance and perfumes
- Soaps and detergents
- Animal dander
- Stress
Eczema can make their skin look red and scaly, it can also be itchy.
When your child scratches their skin, it can break their skin surface and cause bleeding which may lead to infection.
The use of emollients and topical steroids when needed, as prescribed by your healthcare provider will keep the skin smooth and intact.
There are many types of different treatments you can use from emollients to topical steroids.
